CAMELOT and FHWS release guidelines for logistics outsourcing in the chemicals industry
Mannheim, Antwerp, June 20, 2018 – The current study “Success factors of 4PL, LLP and 3PL in chemical logistics” answers the question of if and when companies from the chemicals industry should outsource logistics management tasks to specialist service providers. It provides supply chain managers in the chemicals industry with a guideline to analyze and redesign their outsourcing strategy. The study, carried out by CAMELOT Management Consultants together with the Institute for Applied Logistics (IAL) at the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (FHWS), will be presented to the public for the first time on the occasion of the BVL Forum Chemical Logistics, held on June 20 and 21, 2018 in Antwerp.
“In order to make the correct decision when outsourcing logistics management tasks, chemical companies must be clear about their own motives, and be successful in determining the role of logistics and their own company culture,” explain the study’s authors, Professor Christian Kille from the Institute for Applied Logistics (IAL) at the FHWS and Constantin Reuter, a logistics expert with CAMELOT. It is also necessary to examine the dimensions of complexity and the internal framework conditions, before the specific contractual arrangement of the cooperation with a logistics service provider can be considered, Kille and Reuter concluded.
The level of knowledge within the chemicals industry regarding the outsourcing of logistics management tasks to so-called Fourth-Party-Logistics (4PL) providers seems to still be fairly modest. This can be seen from an expert survey carried out among logistics managers in the chemicals industry in Germany, which was conducted within the framework of the study. Around 80 percent of those surveyed have a vague idea of the subject of 4PL services. Only around 15 percent state that they have good or very good knowledge of the subject of 4PL services. The majority express uncertainty about the topic of outsourcing logistics management tasks.
